Since Anthem’s latest patch, the game has reportedly been calculating damage based on the average power level of a player’s loadout. However, when doing this calculation the game doesn’t take into account the number of items slotted into the loadout. Following that logic, simply removing a low tier support item (since there are no masterwork or legendary versions yet) entirely means that a loadout that has less equipment will still have a higher average and do more damage. Thus, players have started removing their support item to get a higher damage output. In Anthem, less is more.
It seems fairly clear that this isn’t how BioWare intended for damage output to be calculated, so it’s unclear how long the trick will work now that it has become public knowledge. At any rate, gamers looking to maximize their damage should start a new loadout and only equip legendary or masterwork items if they’d like to experiment with the bugged system. The trick impacts melee, combos, ultimates, and procs, making it quite a versatile boost. Of course, HP limitations will need to be considered - but players are finding a way to balance their support item-free loadouts with this new information.
As if that isn’t enough, other Redditors are reporting that gamers can proc weapon perks by shooting allies, which is another aspect of gameplay that is likely unintended. One gamer posted a video showing an example with Striker’s Savagery, so this glitch is likely still active, too.
The news comes just a week after one gamer discovered that a level 1 weapon did more damage than a late game, top-tier weapon. Despite the damage numbers shown on the screen, the level 1 common Defender rifle actually killed enemies in less hits than a level 45 Masterwork Ralner’s Blaze rifle. Between a level 1 common rifle being one of the most dangerous weapons in the game and less being more in terms of support items, it’s clear that Anthem still has a lot of balancing work to do.
Anthem is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
