When discussing BioWare’s gameplay-first approach with Anthem, Warner also stated that it’s “invigorating” to get feedback from others about the title’s mechanics and the different play styles that one can take on while experiencing it. As stated by the director, “Usually, when you talk about a Mass Effect or a Dragon Age, people invariably end up talking about the plots or the points, and it’s very refreshing, when people talk about Anthem, they talk about flying or fighting monsters, or the gear, the Javelins, and it’s been a great opportunity for us to put gameplay first.”

Of course, even though BioWare is putting an emphasis on gameplay first this time around, it doesn’t mean that Anthem won’t have a plot worth experiencing. As explained by Warner, the studio is well aware of the importance of building a living, breathing world that allows for companionship and the ability for players to be the hero of their own story. According to the director, “We’re adding things to it, we’re adding these interesting social storytelling elements to it. But, those moments, that companionship and strong characters, those are very much there.”

As of now, not much is known about Anthem’s actual plot other than the premise that humanity has been isolated behind the wall of Fort Tarsis to protect them from the dangers of the primeval lands outside of it. Players will take on the role of Freelancers, who leave Fort Tarsis and explore the surrounding landscape in their Javelin exosuits to safeguard civilization from any threats beyond the wall.

For the more visually inclined, fans can give Anthem’s story trailer a gander and see if it’s compelling enough to keep the game on their radar. Should it not be too interesting, then at least BioWare has assured that the gameplay will be polished.

Anthem is scheduled to release in February 22, 2019 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
