The Coppa Sicilia match featuring Borgata Terrenove and Bagheria is set to be investigated by the Italian federation. This match was the final game of a three-team group, that also featured Partinicaudace.

All of the teams belong to the eightth tier of the Italian league, known as the Prima Categoria.

The game, which was played yesterday, required Bagheria to at least draw the match to qualify. But after Borgata hit two goals in quick succession and the score reached 4-3 with only 10 minutes left to play, what ensued was a total shock.

Bagheria scored one own goal after the another, as the Borgata players watched in bewilderment. All these own goals were shared between three players.

The result ensured that Borgata Terrenove qualified ahead of the Partinicaudace due to a superior goal difference.

“It had been a real contest up to a certain point, then Bagheria staged a farce,” the Borgata coach Ignazio Chianetta said.

“Their captain told me they preferred us to qualify rather than Partinicaudace.

Partinicaudace’s coach Giovanni Cammarata said: “I can guarantee there was no agreement between us and Bagheria.

“I can’t try to understand a motive for these eight own goals. It has nothing to do with football and I hope the FIGC investigates.”

Sandro Morgana, the FIGC’s regional president, said: “I will personally inform our prosecutors about this and they will look into the case and establish which sanctions should apply.”

Despite the best efforts of the Bagheria team, they fell well short of the world record for most goals scored/conceded in a single senior football game. The record was set by Stade Olympique L’Emryn, who lost a match 149-0 against AS Adema in Madagascar in 2002. Stade Olympique had deliberately scored all their goals as a mark of protest over a refereeing decision.
