According to a recent report from PCGamesN, the Steam Deck has recently added another 500 games to its increasing roster. Valve likes to ensure that as many releases as possible are compatible with its portable device, with games being considered either “verified” or “playable.” The former means that they should run without issue on the Deck, whereas the latter means that they should run, but users may experience a few issues, such as a drop in frame rates. One of the latest games to be added is Insomniac’s Spider-Man.

It was only a few weeks ago that the Steam Deck supported 4,000 games, so things are coming along nicely in terms of having a healthy library for people to play. Prior to release, it was considered to be on par with the likes of the Switch, but it’s quickly been established that it’s more than just a games console. As mentioned above, a different operating system can be installed on the Steam Deck. With mouse and keyboard compatibility to boot, it’s more akin to a mobile PC than a handheld gaming system, though most are likely using it for games.
And not just the verified games, either. Recently, someone installed an OG Xbox emulator onto the Steam Deck in order to play classic games like Halo and TimeSplitters 2. Emulation seems to be gaining popularity on Valve’s device, and it means that even more games can be played, not just the ones a user has on their Steam profile.
Valve doesn’t have a great track record when it comes to hardware, with the likes of the Steam Controller and Steam Link not really catching on in the industry. However, the Steam Deck is a strong contender in the mobile market, as well as being proof that the company can step outside its software comfort zone and make a difference. There’s even a possibility that a follow-up system could be in the makes, but for now, this portable PC is certainly making heads turn.
